Tooth Extractions

Tooth Extractions: Unavoidable

Some procedures are more routine than others for dentists to complete. One of the more routine practices are tooth extractions. They are a quite simple procedure for a doctor to take on, and generally cause patients a lot of stress when thinking about the occurrence.

When undergoing a wisdom tooth extraction, your doctor will provide IV sedation, and apply Novocain to the site. After your surgery, your mouth will remain numb for a few hours, which will allow you to feel limited pain. Along with these medications, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic, if they feel you are susceptible to infection.

If your extraction is just a pulling of a tooth, you will be given the Novocain as well as nitrous oxide, if needed. When your numbness subsides, and you’re still experiencing some pain or discomfort, over the counter pain medicines work well.

Because of the routine nature of tooth extractions, there should be nothing to worry about when it comes to the procedure. If you need any other guidance on proper care, your doctor will inform you of any measures you should take after your tooth extraction for complete healing. Healing time depends on the patient, but typically takes two to three weeks. During this time, you may face swelling, which is common, especially for wisdom teeth extractions.

Tooth extractions are hardly avoidable, but the best thing to do to try to keep them at bay would be to practice great oral hygiene. Typically, extractions occur to make room for adult teeth, take care of overcrowding, or because of wisdom teeth issues. Brushing your teeth and flossing on a routine basis will allow you to maintain a healthy mouth, and strong teeth and gums. In the case your extraction is unavoidable, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions.

If for any reason you believe an extraction should take place, contact your dentist. They will be able to assess the mouth effectively and efficiently. Scheduling routine dental appointments with your dentist at The Dental Studio of Midland is also a great idea, as they will keep an eye on your teeth health.
